Perspective
We all bring a certain perspective to our work. We look at what we do through the lens of what we’ve already done. Our past is like a lens. It tints what we see – for better or worse. Everyone brings something unique to the table based upon their past.
In the knowledge economy, employers are really hiring for perspective, not just experience. Experience gives you perspective, but it’s not the only way to get perspective. The reason companies want experience is because they want the perspective that comes with success and experience.
So how else can you get perspective? Education is one great way to gain a perspective. Thinking is another great way to get perspective. Relationships add to our perspective as well. Hanging around highly successful people who have a sense of how they got where they are gives us perspective as well.
The best managers find people with unique perspectives, not just the people with the most experience.
